Part of cultivating relationships with donors for nonprofits is the ability to help causes near and dear to their hearts. Whether it is a recurring donation or a pledge, every little bit helps. However, how do you know how effective a donation is?

A new article from Nature Magazine suggested that it’s difficult to show how donations – especially large ones, like the one Mark Zuckerberg gave New Jersey – positively impact the community they’re trying to serve.

The ‘science of philanthropy’ looks at different components including the size of the donation and the role that a charity takes in managing and creating grant proposals. Since charities have different goals, it is important to look at the effectiveness of different measures as they relate to hitting these goals.
